Anyone who’s experienced the Hong Kong Sevens before can tell you that the festivities tend to focus on drinking more than eating, but if you’re going to make it through three debaucherous days of nonstop revelry, you’ll want to ensure your stomach is properly lined. This year, ditch the drab stadium snacks and instead head to these venues that are getting into the proper Sevens spirit with fun food and drink promotions.
The Butchers Club Burger
Rugby Sevens weekend is all about excess, a spirit that The Butchers Club Burger is channeling with their ‘Triple Happiness: Can You Kick It?’ food challenge. All weekend long, guests can tackle the task of scarfing down a Triple Happiness meal set (HK$240), which includes the limited-edition Triple Happiness Burger, duck fat fries and a cold beer. Finish within seven minutes, and you’ll get bragging rights and a free meal. An extension of the Double Happiness Burger (HK$180), the Triple Happiness Burger adds an extra Australian Angus beef patty and layer of cheese to the already humongous stack. This may be one challenge that’s even harder than kicking the winning drop goal from 50 metres out.

FanWalk at Lee Gardens
Half the fun of the Sevens is the hype and anticipation leading up to the games, which you can feel in full force at the FanWalk at Lee Gardens, a rugby-themed wonderland en route to the stadium. The Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens FanWalk transforms the crowded shopping centre into a carnival extravaganza featuring street performers, musical acts, prizes and raffle giveaways, celebrity appearances, and food and drink served up from around the world — accompanied by live broadcasts of the games. Meanwhile, shoppers can enjoy special weekend discounts at 40 retailers in Lee Gardens, as well as a discount of up to 30% on exclusive rugby-themed menu items at 38 restaurants in the mall, when you pay using an HSBC credit card (available through 30 April) or present a Cathay Pacific boarding pass (available through 9 April).

Lily & Bloom
Executive chef Chris Grare is whipping up a beef and beer feast at American restaurant and bar Lily & Bloom from 7–9 April, with pairings inspired by five of the top contenders at Rugby Sevens. Voting for Team USA? Dig into the 10oz chargrilled ribeye (HK$395) with seasonal vegetables, paired with Founders All Day IPA, a honey-hued pour that’s light and fruity. Meanwhile, Team Japan is all about — you guessed it — Asian flavours, with a 8oz wagyu sirloin steak (HK$725) paired with roasted maitake mushrooms and teriyaki jus. A Hitachino Nest White Ale deepens the meat’s complex and beefy flavours.
Team New Zealand features slow-cooked beef cheek (HK$325) with a smoked cauliflower purée; Team England has beef tenderloin with truffle mash (HK$465); and Team Australia highlights wagyu skirt steak with chimichurri (HK$475), paired with the country’s own Napoleone Brewery Saison Duval. No matter which team you’re rooting for (or devouring, in this case), this is one gamble that’s pretty much a safe bet.
