5 unconventional fitness classes to try in KL this 2017

The holidays may have come and gone, but many of us are still paying the high price for all the lemang (glutinous rice) and rendang (spicy meat) we indulged in at all the Hari Raya Puasa open houses last month. And seeing how it’s proving to be quite an uphill task to lose the extra pounds we gained from the festive feasting, it may be time to break out the exercise gear.

Burning calories doesn’t necessarily mean running laps around the track, though. If that’s too repetitive and boring, you can always amp up your workout game by engaging in fitness classes that are fun and able to get your adrenaline pumping.

Thankfully, Kuala Lumpur offers quite a variety of unconventional classes to try. The last two years, for instance, saw the growing popularity of fitness workouts such as spin classes and trampoline routines. Since then, more interesting exercise options have popped up in the scene — think beer yoga (which, as its name suggests, entails indulging in craft beers as you stretch on yoga mats) and aqua cycling. To get you started on losing that flab, we’ve put together a guide to 5 fitness classes you should try. Kangoo Power Workout

Low-impact Kangoo Jumps rebound shoes may have been around since the 1990s. But aerobic workouts like Kangoo Power that highlight the use of this Swiss-engineered footwear, only reached Kuala Lumpur in January this year. A mix of cardio and resistance exercise, it entails doing Zumba while wearing the elevated shoes. This not only adds fun to your workout, but also reduces shock impact on the ankles, shins, knees, spine, and lower back. An hour-long session can burn 1,000 calories, increase your endurance, and strengthen your core, legs and glutes. Do it twice a week for a month and you’re on your way to hitting your weight goal in a safe and healthy way.

Beer Yoga

Been doing yoga, but still feeling stressed out? A local fitness group thinks doing it with a bottle of beer can do the trick. By pairing sipping with stretching, Black and White Fitness Studio says beer yoga can open up your chakra, and eventually help you enter the deeper stages of enlightenment. This new type of yoga can also get first-timers out of their shells to get them more relaxed, which is crucial to doing the basic poses. While the fitness group doesn’t offer regular classes in its studio yet, its yoga instructors actually offer private group sessions for RM1,000 regardless of group size. You’ll have to bring your own beers, though.

Xtend Barre

An energy-pumping workout, Xtend Barre combines the elements of dance and pilates to strengthen and tone up your body. While it may be an advantage, you don’t actually need to have a background in ballet. Just follow the elegant Xtend Barre moves for 55 minutes per session and you’ll have toned arms, leaner legs, and a ripped body in no time.

Hydrorider Workout

If you enjoy going to spinning classes, you’re gonna love doing it on a  Hydrorider — a water bike that’s made for aqua cycling. With your lower body submerged underwater, you have to pedal against water resistance. Don’t worry if you’re nursing a back, knee, or foot injury.
